eGateway VIT Chennai Library is a browser extension developed to help VIT Chennai users access subscribed academic resources through the institutional eGateway proxy.

Single Purpose

This extension has one purpose: detect supported academic websites and route access through egateway.chennai.vit.ac.in so eligible users can use institutional subscriptions.

Data We Collect and Process

• VIT Registration Number or Faculty ID - collected during onboarding for institutional verification.
• Authentication/session cookies for eGateway - read and managed only to determine login state, keep the session active while the browser is open, and clear stale sessions.
• Extension state data - redirect toggle, onboarding completion, login window metadata, and session markers stored using Chrome storage APIs.

How We Use Data

• To verify institutional eligibility (VIT ID/FID onboarding flow).
• To provide proxy redirection for supported domains.
• To maintain and validate authenticated eGateway sessions.
• To notify users when re-authentication is required.

Data Sharing and Third Parties

• The onboarding ID is sent to a VIT Chennai-managed logging endpoint hosted on Google Apps Script for institutional record keeping.
• We do not sell personal data.
• We do not use or transfer user data for advertising, profiling, creditworthiness, or lending purposes.

Data We Do Not Collect

• Passwords or login credentials.
• Health, financial, or payment information.
• User messages, keystroke logging, or unrelated website content.
• Location data.

Storage and Retention

• storage.local is used for onboarding and extension settings and remains until removed by the user, extension reset, or uninstall.
• storage.session is used for runtime session state and is cleared when the browser session ends.
• Session cookies are controlled by browser cookie rules and may be removed by logout, extension logic, browser settings, or browser closure behavior.

Chrome Permissions and Why They Are Needed

• storage - save extension preferences and onboarding/session markers.
• webNavigation - detect navigation events for supported domains and login/logout flows.
• tabs - open onboarding/login pages and redirect tabs to proxy URLs.
• alarms - run periodic keepalive/session checks.
• cookies - check and clear eGateway authentication cookies.
• notifications - show re-login/session-expiry prompts.
• host permissions - limited to eGateway and supported academic domains for proxy routing.

Remote Code

This extension does not execute remote code. All extension JavaScript is packaged with the extension.

Your Choices

• You can uninstall the extension at any time to remove local extension data.
• You can clear browser cookies and site data using browser settings.
• You can contact us to request correction or deletion of institutional onboarding records.
